Workshop Description:

Motivations
Keeping abreast the advances of science and technology poses a variety of challenges for scientists and practitioners. Understanding the dynamics and complexity of large-scale scientific and technological information intuitively and accurately requires persistent and integrative multidisciplinary and multi-perspective efforts.

Description
The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from different but potentially interrelated research arenas to identify theoretical and practical challenges and the potential of enabling techniques and promising approaches to advancing our ability to understand and keep track of the big picture of science and technology. Our ultimate goal is to meet identified challenges with easy to understand and easy to communicate visual analytics tools. We invite contributions from a number of relevant research areas to develop a joint research agenda and promote a wide range of exemplars for further studies.

Target Audience
Researchers and practitioners who are interested in structural, temporal, and semantic dynamics of science and technology in general and any of the topics of interest listed below should participate and contribute to the workshop. Researchers in topic detection and tracking, social network analysis, text mining, natural language processing, information visualization and visual analytics are particularly welcome. We also extend our invitation to innovative contributions from other areas.

Topics:
We are looking for contributions in the following areas:

  • Science and technology indicators
  • Quantitative studies of science and technology
  • Structural and temporal dynamics of science and technology
  • Social networks in science and technology
  • Topic detection and tracking
  • Text mining and natural language processing
  • Geospatial studies of information diffusion
  • Progressive knowledge domain visualization
  • Visual analytics in science and technology
  • Network analysis and link analysis
  • Bibliometrics, informetrics, and webometrics
  • Trends in science and technology

Publication:

Papers submitted to this workshop will be included in the InSciT2006 Proceedings Book in the same way that regular sessions' papers, and will form a separate book section. Paper submission and revision will also follow the same conference general procedure, i.e. every submission will be reviewed, an acceptance round will be carried out by the Session Scientific Committee on an abstract revision basis. Further, presentation modality decision of each accepted contribution (i.e. oral or poster presentation) will be decided on a full paper basis.
(NOTE: At this moment, InSciT2006 Organization is arranging the possibility of getting this workshop's papers publishedwith a major international publisher. If this choice is successful, it will be announce at due time.)

In addition, a selected number of accepted papers will be considered, under amendment / extension in order to meet journal requirements, for publication in Information Visualization Journal, published by Palgrave Macmillan Journals. ISSN: 1473-8716. Every paper, selected by the workshop's scientific committee after the conference, will be of high-quality, and after extension should be about 8000 words on average. A new round of a very strict review will be carried before final journal acceptance.

Paper submission information:

Abstract Submission
In order to edit your abstract, please follow the format of the template you can find below. Two pages extended abstracts are required to let the Workshop Committee have enough elements to assess the contribution.
As you have your abstract edited, it must be submitted as an attachment by email to inscit2006@instac.es before May 15 th, 2006. Acceptance notifications should reach you no later than 10 days after your submission, all the notification will have been sent to the authors before May 25th, 2006.

CLOSED!

Full paper submission
Once the abstract have been accepted you are invited to submit a complete manuscript not exceeding 5 pages, including figures and references. To edit the papers, please, use the paper template provided on the site. Submission will consist of a file attached to an e-mail message directed to inscit2006@instac.es. Deadline for full paper submission is June 30th.

CLOSED!

Presentation Information:
As it is ruled for the InSciT2006 Conference, there will be set two presentation modalities: Oral and Poster. Every author can apply for any of them, however, the papers being presented orally will be selected be the session committee on a full paper basis, as stated above. Accepted papers which have applied for oral presentation but have not been selected by the session committee will be presented as Posters. Please be sure you have indicated your preference in the email to which you attached your paper.
ORAL presentations will be allocated a half an hour slot (25 minutes talk and 5 minutes discussion) into the Scientific Programme Schedule. Computer and overhead projectors will be available for presenters. The technical organizers will give you additional instructions concerning your session and the presentation of your paper in the Conference Secretariat. Please make sure that your computer presentation is fully operational before your talk. Power Point presentations on a USB drive or CDROM are strongly preferred.
In POSTER sessions authors are requested to be present at the poster during the scheduled times for discussion. Posters must be brought in person by the author and should not be mailed in advance. The maximum dimensions are 90 cm (width) by 120 cm (height). At the top of the poster, please provide the title of the paper, names of the authors and affiliations. Artwork and lettering should be large and clear enough so that the poster is readable from a distance of ~1.5 m.
